Types of Resin and Their Uses

When working with resin it is important to know that there are many different types of resin that are made for different applications. Some are made for crafting, some are made for doming, and others are made for pouring large volumes. They all are made with different properties, and you should have a look at the product's data sheet to see what those properties are. This guide will have a look at the different PoxyArt resins.

Epoxy Resin

It is important to use an Epoxy Resin specifically formulated for arts and crafts. PoxyArt Craft Resin is perfect for the everyday crafter. Simple to use and safe to work with when using the appropriate PPE.

PoxyArt Craft resin has a medium to thick viscosity, this makes it easy to work with when you are creating resin pouring art, jewellery, and mould castings. It allows you to create a beautiful high gloss dome finish on your products.

PoxyArt Craft resin can be used for clear castings or can be coloured using many different resin pigments.

You have 20 – 40 minutes working time (depending on temperature and volume mixed). Your project will be set after 8-24 hours, allow more time in colder weather.

Resin Safety

It is important to have a look at the safety aspect of the resin that you are using. PoxyArt Craft resin is VOC and solvent free and is considered nontoxic when cured. PoxyArt resin has not been tested by a third party and can therefor not claim that it is food safe, it is however suitable for incidental food contact but not as a cutting or food preparation surface.

Yes, epoxy resin can be cancer causing. It does contain carcinogenic chemicals that can be absorbed by your skin. Be sure to always wear gloves when working with resin.

What can PoxyArt Craft Resin be used for?

PoxyArt Craft resin is very versatile and will be appropriate for most of your resin craft projects.

  • Coasters
  • Jewellery
  • Trays
  • Bookmarks
  • Keyrings
  • Resin pouring art.
  • Coating your canvas paintings
  • Ocean art
  • Geode art
  • Doming

PoxtArt resin is designed mainly for items that will be on display and are not scratch resistant.

Industrial resins are made for the purposes of being scratch resistant or chemical resistant to suit specific needs, like high traffic areas or items that should withstand years of wear and tear. We suggest that you consider this when making your resin selection.

What makes PoxyArt Craft resin special?

As a crafter I don’t like doing hard calculations, I want to have fun and create beautiful pieces without any fuss. PoxyArt Craft resin has a very easy mixing ratio of 1:1 by volume, no scale needed and no calculations.

Our resin is VOC and solvent free, allowing for an odour less craft space. Please note that even though our resin does not contain VOC’s it can still give off harmful fumes when heated or when other pigments are introduced. Always work in a well-ventilated space and use the appropriate PPE.

Unfortunately, all Epoxy resins will eventually turn yellow. We have added an UV stabilizer into our resin to help prevent it from turning yellow too quickly.

Casting Resin or PoxyArt Casting XL

The difference between our Craft Resin and Casting XL resin is simply the volume and depth that it can be casted at.

PoxyArt Casting XL is a slow curing epoxy resin. Depending on the volume, your casting will only set over 7 days. The longer curing time allows for clearer castings at the air bubbles has more time to release. When doing bigger volumes and thicker castings it is important to use a slower setting resin. Resin gives off heat when curing and if it cures to fast the temperature will get too high and cause a exothermic reaction, ruining your casting and mould.

What can PoxyArt Casting XL Resin be used for?

PoxyArt Casting XL resin can be casted at very large volumes and depths. Making it perfect for the following projects:

  • Casting of deep moulds.
  • Castings containing flowers, insects, and other 3d objects.
  • River tables
  • Casting of sculptures
  • Enclosed sphere moulds, where the mould does not allow big surface area for heat to escape.

UV Resin

UV resin is a one-part resin that sets within a few minutes of being exposed to ultraviolet light. It can be tinted, but some pigments do interfere with the curing process. It is most often used for clear coatings of small items.

It does have a long working time, as it will only start setting when exposed to UV light. You do require a UV lamp to set it. It is a more expensive resin to work with and is not that versatile in application.
